Did you know that even the most inclusive home cleaning services can’t (and shouldn’t) tackle everything? While everyone wants a full-service cleaning team - and most feel really close - there are a few tasks that you really want to leave to their specific professionals. Whether it’s due to safety, expertise, or equipment limitations, in this blog, you’ll learn when to draw the line and call in specialized help.

Mold Trouble Zones

Mold is a tricky thing. Sometimes all it takes to clear it up is a quick wipe with a disinfectant, and other times it requires whole-home remediation. Unfortunately, many times you won’t know how extensive the mold is until a professional comes out and does a whole-home examination.

That being said, if it’s a small area in a common place like a shower corner or bathtub, your cleaning team will be able to clear it away with their expertise. However, if that same area keeps coming back or if you’re noticing the spot grow or migrate, it is definitely worth calling out a mold remediation specialist.

Chimneys and Fireplaces

This one may be a little more obvious, but it's worth mentioning nonetheless. While sweeping up loose ash that made its way outside the fireplace is one thing, internal flue or chimney sweeping is another.

Thoroughly cleaning chimneys and fireplaces requires specialized equipment and access to heights that will be out of scope for any traditional cleaning service. Instead, contact a professional chimney sweep to ensure your chimney is free of debris.

HVAC Ductwork

Dusty vent covers? We can wipe those right off, no problem. However, any cleaning beyond that will require a whole separate team entirely. A housekeeping service will not unscrew your vents to access the ducts or crawl into tight spaces to sanitize your system. Luckily, modern HVAC systems are pretty self-sufficient when it comes to keeping themselves clean, but if you have concerns, contact your local HVAC maintenance company.

Windows and Gutters

The heights required to clean windows and gutters are far outside the reach of a housekeeping service. To effectively clean windows and gutters, you need an extension ladder, extension poles, and even harness equipment - none of which will be found next to the vacuum cleaner and broom in the backseat of the cleaner’s car.

Instead, you can expect your housekeeper to ensure your mirrors are streak-free and your windows dust-free.

Deep Carpet Cleaning

While sweeping, vacuuming, and mopping are standard staples of any good housekeeping service, deep-cleaning carpets is another industry entirely. Your typical housekeeper is not going to have the heat-powered machinery and shampoo that are needed to clean up any deep-set carpet stains. Instead, consider renting the machine from your local hardware store or hiring a professional carpet cleaning company to get your carpets looking factory-new.

Intensive Hardwood Floor Cleaning

Similar to carpet deep-cleaning, intensive hardwood floor cleaning or refinishing needs to be left to a professional flooring company. Because hardwood floors can be delicate, anything besides sweeping, vacuuming, or mopping with a hardwood-safe cleaner will be out of scope for a normal cleaning service.

If your hardwood floors are stained, worn down, or chipped, we recommend contacting a hardwood restoration company to get your floors back to tip-top shape.

While the above tasks may be outside the scope of a housekeeping service, minimizing what your cleaning team focuses on makes sure that they’re able to perfect what they’re good at. Instead of asking your housekeeper to spread themselves too thin or do things unsafely, allow them to excel at what they were hired for - getting your home sparkling clean.
